  • Add note to cover page stating all work shall comply with the most current Los Angeles County Fire Code
  • Provide a scope of work on the title page for the ESS including number of stories, occupancy type, total number of ESS units, ESS models, and ESS locations
  • Use the Fire Hazard Severity Zone website to determine if the project is in a Fire Hazard Severity Zone
  • Add site plan note (if applicable) stating the project is not located in a fire hazard severity zone or state responsibility area and is exempt from CRC R377.6.2 and CBC 706A.2 requirements
  • Provide 36-inch wide emergency escape and rescue pathways to qualifying doors and windows above the roof plane per CFC 1204.2.2
  • No electrical components associated with the battery-integrated PV system shall be located above the roof decking within required emergency pathways
  • Compliance with emergency pathway requirements shall be subject to inspection by the fire code official, including lifting roof tiles as required
  • Provide a garage floor plan if applicable
  • When ESS is installed inside a garage, the attached garage must comply with all applicable codes, standards, and the manufacturer’s installation manual, including fire protection features and alarm/detector requirements when available
  • Exterior ESS units shall not be installed within 5 feet of windows, doors, or HVAC vents
  • ESS units shall be installed no less than 3 feet from other ESS units
  • Electrical Equipment Elevation (EEE) page is required
  • Add note to EEE and SLD stating the battery is installed at least 5 feet away from doors and windows
  • Add note to ELD stating the ESS circuit breaker shall be secured by an additional fastener per section 408.36(D)
  • Circuit breaker and fastener must be manufactured by the same manufacturer

  • Clarify how emergency services will shut down all PV and battery systems
  • Provide an accessible emergency service disconnect within 3 feet of the main service panel that shuts down all solar and battery systems
  • Emergency disconnect must comply with code sections 110.25, 705.22, 705.23, 705.31, 706.7, and 706.30
  • If ESS is installed in a basement, garage, or more than 6 feet from the main service panel, provide an ESS emergency shutdown plunger switch
  • Comply with California Fire Code 1206.2 requirements including room layout, fire-resistance-rated assemblies, battery quantities and types, manufacturer specifications and ratings, energy management system details, signage, fire extinguishing systems, smoke detection systems, and rack storage with seismic support
