The Haverhill Fire Department requests that roof mounted solar arrays are installed with the following setbacks:

Gable roof: not less than two 3 foot wide access pathways from the eave to the ridge on each roof slope where solar panels are located.

  • One access pathway shall be provided on the street or driveway side of the roof
  • No Overhead Electrical crossing access pathways
  • NO conduit across access pathways.
  • No overgrown trees or shrubs below access pathways.

Setbacks at ridge (Both Sides):

  • 18โ€ if PV coverage < 33%
  • (If sprinkled < 66%)
  • 36โ€ if PV coverage >33%
  • (If sprinkled > 66%)

Hip roof: one 3-foot-wide access pathway from the eave to the ridge on each roof slope where panels are located

Hip/valley: 18โ€ wide access pathway from the eave to the ridge


ESS to follow NFPA 855 2023 ed. If applicable


Fire set backs for flat roofs

Due to the fact that there is no current set back wording in NFPA 1 on residential flat roofs The Haverhill Fire Department requests that FLAT ROOF mounted solar arrays are installed with the following setbacks:

  • Around the perimeter of the roof at least an 18โ€ set back. 
  • One 36โ€ access pathway shall be provided on the street or driveway side of the roof running across the roof from EAVE to EAVE.
  • From EAVE to EAVE in the opposite direction a minimum 18โ€ escape pathway running at the center of the roof forming a + pattern. This allows firefighter escape points at all Eave lines
  • No Overhead Electrical crossing access pathways
  • NO conduit across access pathways.
  • No overgrown trees or shrubs below access pathways.
  • ESS to follow NFPA 855    2023 ed.     If applicable
