The engineer letter for the project, and every single roof mounted solar array application in Palmer, will need to include specific details on the roof framing to show that the roof is strong enough to hold the arrays. This will include the size, species and grade, spacing and span of the rafters for EACH roof section getting a solar array. If the roof sections are the same, that will need to be noted. The engineer letter needs to match the plans and label the roof sections accordingly. If there are any additional supports, i.e knee walls, purlins, etc. they will need to be included in the letter along with what type of support it is and how it is supported down to the basement. Any lower roof sections, porches, or anything else that is under a roof section with an array will need to be checked for impact loads from sliding snow. Any characteristics of the roof that are not considered “typical†framing, such as hips or valleys, will need to be checked for piling snow. To sum it up, the first page of the engineer letter should state exactly how the roof is framed and exactly what is being approved for the additional loading of the solar arrays. Additional details can be given in the following pages from the engineer but only to support what is written in the first page. On PE calcs, all mounting planes must show individual calculations rather than a combined calculation for all mounting planes together.

ALL JOBS: The Inspector for this AHJ is VERY particular. Do not take for granted that the roof pitch protractor shown on one roof plane and the Site Tech's notes for pitch covers all of the roof. If there is not a protractor photo or note about pitch for the specific roof plane you are designing for send for another site audit to get that info. This Inspector will kick it back if there is a notable difference and it is not shown on the plans.
