We offer two ways to meter a solar array on Hatteras Island. The member can have the array metered separately from the house and sell 100% of the energy to CHEC at the wholesale rate. Right now that is around 3.5 cents/kwh. The more popular choice is to meter the array through the existing meter and use what they produce to offset their monthly bill. With this option, they are getting the retail rate (around 14.5 cents/kwh) but we do not compensate for any excess that is put back on the grid.

Compiled from public records, 2026. Tariffs and interconnection rules change; verify with CHEC - Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative before you rely on this. The useful move: if an installer says you need a main panel upgrade, ask how these tap and interconnection policies were considered first.
