Net Excess Generation Notes
  • PG-1 - Parallel Generation - For interconnected PV systems of any size
  • PG-2 - Parallel Generation: Net Metering - For interconnected PV systems up to 100 kW (default rate) - Net metering is a rate option that credits the customer’s MGE bill at the appropriate retail rate for any electricity generated from the PV system that flows back onto the electric distribution system. If over the previous 12-month period the amount of electricity from a PV system sent to the electric distribution system exceeded the amount of electricity used, the customer is a net seller to the electric distribution system. Net sellers are credited at a different rate for a portion of electricity generated.

Plans & docs

Site Plan Reqs

• Location of exterior interconnection disconnect switch

• Adjoining street name

• Street address for the exact location of the distributed generation facility

• Location of major equipment

• Electric service entrance

• MGE electric meter

• Interface equipment

• MGE Transformer or utility pole

The Utility meter and utility disconnect switch must be within 10' of each other

SLD Reqs

All Jobs

  • Lockable interconnection disconnect switch with a visual open (call out "visual open" next to the disconnect on the drawing)- must be located outside as close to the transformer or service entrance as possible
  • Show voltage rating of AC Disconnect
  • Method of grounding (generator and transformer ground connections)
  • Size of installation (kW-AC)

Battery Jobs:

  • For whole home backup situations, a Fused Disconnect must be installed between the Utility Meter and Backup Gateway. No Other Disconnects are required for these configurations.

Multiple Disconnects

  • Must be labeled appropriately - "1 of 2", "2 of 2", etc.
Install Reqs
  • MG&E requires us to schedule a disco/reco with them for any type of electrical work (meter or MSP). If we’re touching their equipment they must be onsite, regardless of the licensed electrician.
  • The customer is required to furnish and install an external interconnection disconnect switch that opens with a visual break, is accessible at all times, is located for ease of access to MGE personnel, and shall be capable of being locked in the open position to facilitate safe and reliable operation of MGE’s electric distribution system.
  • The utility meter must have a 3' frontal clearance and unobstructed working space. It must be located at least 3' from the gas meter if applicable.
  • The AC disconnect must have 3' frontal clearance and unobstructed working space.
Placards
  • Placards as required per NEC 690. Placards are engraved plastic, brass, or aluminum and at least 1/2" tall
  • AC disconnect: label with the following wording: “RAPID SHUTDOWN SWITCH FOR SOLAR PV SYSTEM” & “MGE UTILITY DISCONNECT SWITCH" and should be no more than 3’ from the switch.
  • Utility meter: Label indicating PV system connected, on utility meter "DUAL POWER SOURCE SECOND SOURCE IS PV"

Compiled from public records, 2026. Tariffs and interconnection rules change; verify with MGE - Madison Gas and Electric Company before you rely on this. The useful move: if an installer says you need a main panel upgrade, ask how these tap and interconnection policies were considered first.
